There's no such thing as "blanks" for flintlock pistols like the one shown, in the way that you'd think of blanks for modern weapons. The closest thing to a "blank" for a flintlock is to load the powder without a bullet in it, but this would not only make the gun noticeably lighter, the powder can just spill out, and the sound it makes when fired without a bullet is noticeably different. If that gun was loaded with a "blank," the old man would have easily noticed.
